Early September (7th - 14th) saw Paul once again artist in residence at Nature in Art, Wallsworth Hall, Twigworth in Gloucester. This has been quite a regular appearance for Paul over the past 12 or so years. During the week long residency Paul not only had work on display, he was also actively engaged in painting. It was a welcome attraction to the many visitors who came into the studio. Paul saw a steady stream of people during his visit, chatting over aspects of the work he was engaged in. Questions relating to this work, along with all the others hanging up on display, came thick and fast from interested persons watching over Paul’s shoulder.

Nature in Art is just a perfect venue for an artist’s residency. One is surrounded by some of the very best wildlife art in the world, having been created by some of the very best names associated with the genre. “It is always a delight”, said Paul, “ to visit this beautiful 18th century building and the ever changing and wonderful collection of art within its grounds. I often feel very humbled, hanging my work alongside some of the greatest ever exponents of wildlife art. I always feel honored by the fact that I am asked to return again and again. I have enjoyed being here once more and chatting with the many interested visitors passing through.”

For those who are not aware, Nature in Art was born of a desire to bring together the very best in Art and Nature, holding it within a special collection for the nation and more importantly, for future generations to enjoy. Those who have not visited the museum should put it at the very top of their ‘to do’ list. Apart from the beautiful architecture of the grand manor house, originally built as a grooms wedding present to his new bride in 1740, the art is outstanding. The collection contains examples of work by many of the best natural history artists past and present. Not only that, the centre hosts many eminent exhibitions annually including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year show. It also has within the grounds, a collection of fine sculpture, well worth the visit on its own. The centre also engages in many onsite and ongoing events for amateur and professional artists alike. Lectures and workshops within its purpose built studios occur regularly throughout the year. The programme of extra events is second to none.

Paul wishes to thank all those who made his visit worthwhile, to Simon Trapnell and all his staff who made Paul feel so welcome, and equally to those who took the time to visit Paul in the studio.
